TÜV SÜD Rail and imc Develop a New Solution for Efficient Wheel-Rail Force Measurements
TÜV SÜD Rail, a longstanding customer of imc Test & Measurement, supports rail manufacturers, infrastructure operators, and railway undertakings with internationally recognized testing and certification expertise. In vehicle running dynamics testing, the company measures wheel-rail forces to verify safe operation, derailment safety, and the interaction between wheel and rail.
In collaboration with imc Test & Measurement, TÜV SÜD Rail has developed a new non-invasive and time-saving telemetry solution based on the proven imc MTP-NT system: imc MTP-NT-XS. The standardized, railway-proof housing simplifies installation on instrumented wheelsets, reduces setup times, and enables faster module replacement during service cases.
For TÜV SÜD Rail, this is a decisive advantage in on-track tests, where measurement systems must withstand high rotational speeds, dust, water, ballast impact, winter temperatures, and mechanical stress - while remaining reliable and quickly serviceable.
As André Rohrbeck, Team Lead Instrumented Wheelset at TÜV SÜD Rail, explains:
"Telemetry systems used in on-track tests on railway vehicles depend on experience and close cooperation. The combination of our application expertise and imc’s manufacturer know-how creates a partnership that works - especially when fast support is needed.
The result is a robust, modular telemetry solution that increases system availability, shortens preparation times, and supports efficient wheel-rail force measurement in demanding rail validation projects.
The full application note explains how TÜV SÜD Rail uses the imc MTP-NT-XS telemetry for reliable wheel-rail force measurement during railway validation and certification tests.
